Introduction

This is a book about a very important subject - how to create a

lifestyle where we are not lonely, especially as we grow older.

As our society has changed from small rural communities and

extended families to urban living and scattered families, loneliness has

become a big problem for many people. This is exacerbated by the

high divorce rate, as well as by the fact that women often outlive their

spouses.

Learning how to manage painful feelings, particularly loneliness, is an

important part of emotional and spiritual growth. The Inner Bonding

process, which I’ve written about in numerous books, is a powerful

process for learning how to manage and take responsibility for painful

feelings. This book, however, is not about managing lonely feelings - it

is about preventing loneliness. It’s about moving beyond our

traditional ways of thinking about live-in lifestyles. It’s about a

wonderful opportunity for emotional and spiritual growth - beloved

companionship.

DAILY INSPIRATION

Our addictions - to busyness, substances, activities - cover up our feelings of loneliness, heartbreak and helplessness over others. Yet, when we are willing to feel these feelings with compassion toward ourselves, they move through us and we are lighter. Today, take time to stop your addictive behavior and compassionately feel the feelings you are trying to avoid.
